Open EML files online — the free EML viewer
EML Viewer is the simplest online EML viewer: it lets you open EML files,
read saved emails, convert EML to PDF and download their attachments — right in the browser. It works on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android with nothing to install. Drop the .eml file above and within seconds you can read the message, the sender and the list of attachments.
Only need the document? You can convert the email to PDF in one click — the quickest way to go from EML to PDF without uploading anything to a server. If the file came out of Outlook, the guide on what winmail.dat is and how to get round it explains what is inside that envelope. We also handle the Outlook formats: .msg files and winmail.dat.
What is an EML file?
A saved message
An .eml is a single email exported from a mail program, with its headers, body and attachments in one file.
Outlook formats
Outlook saves messages as .msg and sometimes attaches a winmail.dat. The .msg is read here; the winmail.dat is not, and we explain what to do with it.
100% local
The file stays in your browser and remote images are blocked, so the sender is never told that you opened the message.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open an EML file online?
Drag the file onto the drop area above, or click to choose it. The message is parsed by your browser and the sender, recipients, date, subject, body and attachment list appear. Nothing to install, no account. The step-by-step version is in how to open an EML file.
Is the online EML viewer free?
Yes. Opening and reading files is free, with no limit on how many. You only pay to export the message as PDF, download the attachments and copy the text — from $2.49 for a single document. The full list is in pricing.
Are my emails safe?
The file is read entirely inside your browser and is never sent to a server: no copy of it exists anywhere but on your own device. We also block the remote images embedded in messages — the pixels that tell the sender you opened the mail. You can check this yourself in the Network panel of your browser's developer tools: while you read, no request goes out to any external domain.
Can it open Outlook .msg files?
Yes. Outlook stores messages in its own format, .msg, a binary container, and sometimes adds a winmail.dat attachment. The viewer opens the .msg and shows the message like any other email, instead of leaving you with an attachment nothing will open. winmail.dat is not opened here, and the reason is in the guide on winmail.dat.
